Join The Fight: Breast Cancer Awareness Month

This October, Stromsoe Insurance Agency is proud to participate in National Breast Cancer Awareness Month. About 1 in 8 women born today in the United States will get breast cancer at some point during her life. After skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common kind of cancer in women. The good news is that many women can survive breast cancer if it’s found and treated early.

  • Know your risk by learning about your family health history and talking to
  • your health care provider about your personal risk.
  • If you are age 40 to 49, talk with your doctor about when to start getting mammograms and how often to get them.
  • Women ages 50 to 74 need mammograms every 2 years. You may choose to start getting mammograms earlier or to get them more often.

Make healthy lifestyle choices:
– Maintain a healthy weight
– Add exercise into your routine
– Limit alcohol intake
– Limit post menopausal hormone use
– Breastfeed if you can

Talk to a doctor about your risk for breast cancer, especially if a close family member has had breast or ovarian cancer. That way they can help you decide when and how often to get a mammogram.

What Driver’s Ed Doesn’t Teach Kids

Your teen’s driver’s ed is a good class for teens to learn and follow the rules of the road, but it doesn’t teach them everything they need to know about their car.

Driving lessons are important because it allows for your child to understand the rules of the road and the nuances of your vehicle. But these driver’s ed often miss the mark when it comes to teaching our children about basic car maintenance and safety. Here are a few things every teen should know that driver’s ed does not teach them.

Importance of Tires

Vehicles can operate without a radio, seats, or even doors. But every on-road vehicle needs a good pair of tires to keep it going and get you from point A to B. Many new cars now come with sensors which alert the driver of deflated tires.
If your teen’s car is not new, they should check their tire pressure at least once a month to ensure that their tires are optimal. They should also know how to check the tread, which keeps the car under their control.

Check Fluids

You may already know about changing your car’s oil every 3,000 miles but every car has more than one fluid. Transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, and other fluids need to be checked and replaced / refilled when needed. A general tune-up should check for these fluids.

Emergency Roadside Kit

Every car needs to have these supplies to prepare for the worst.

  • First aid kit
  • Tire pressure gauge
  • Oil, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluid
  • Flashlight and portable radio with extra batteries
  • Jumper cables
  • Battery charging kit
  • Bottled water and non-perishable foods
  • Tool kit with wrenches, screwdrivers, and a hammer
