What is Multiple Sclerosis?
MS is a chronic neurological condition that affects the central nervous system. The immune system attacks myelin, the protective layer surrounding nerve fibers. This causes inflammation and the erosion of the myelin. Overtime, the damaged area hardens forming a sclerosis. These bits of hardened scar tissues can develop at multiple sites throughout the central nervous system. This scarring disrupts the transmission of nerve signals that the brain uses to communicate with the rest of the body.
What are the Symptoms of MS?
The two most common symptoms of MS are fatigue and difficulty walking. The fatigue can easily become overwhelming, making it difficult to perform even routine tasks. Difficulty walking can occur due to a number of reasons. For instance: numbness of the legs or feet, difficulty balancing, muscle weakness, and muscle spasticity. Other common symptoms include speech disorders, tremors, cognitive issues involving concentration, memory, and problem solving, and acute or chronic pain.
