The Importance of Personal Umbrella Insurance

Even if you have excellent auto insurance, you aren’t covered for everything. Many liability settlements are for $1 million or more. Most policies do not provide this limit of protection, but that’s where a personal umbrella policy kicks in.

If you drive often, have a great deal of assets, or have young drivers in the house, a usual policy can only take you so far. The same goes for your home! Pools, trampolines and dogs can all lead to incidents where a normal policy will only take you so far. However, an Umbrella Policy can provide you with extra liability coverage to protect against expensive and freak accidents. So what are some of the scenarios in which you should have an umbrella policy?

Why We Personally Recommend a Personal Umbrella Insurance Policy

Frequently Entertain in Your Home

No matter how cautious you try to be, injuries still happen — and if you regularly host others in your home, the risk of incident grows. For example, lets imagine that you decide to host a holiday party in your backyard.  Your coworker’s husband has a few too many drinks and as he is leaving your property for the night, he slips on your front step and hits his head. You could be responsible for their medical bills, lost wages and pain and suffering if they decide to sue you. Even if you have done everything right, you could end up paying a great deal for a lawyer to defend you in court. Where your homeowners policy stops, your umbrella policy would kick in.

A Pet

It is estimated that upwards of 2 million bites happen every year, from dogs alone! The most likely place for these attacks to happen is in the home, raising your risk if you have a pet. The average cost per dog bite claim has increased over the years, making umbrella insurance a worthwhile investment if you have a pet at home.

A Swimming Pool on Your Property

You can be held accountable for any medical expenses a guest sustains due to an injury at your pool. This is in addition to the attorney’s fees that you accrue to defend if they sue for damages. Your umbrella coverage will increase your risk protection beyond the boundaries of your homeowners’ policies in this situation.

A Teen Driver at Home

Your teen has an increased risk of incident on the road while they are gaining confidence in their driving abilities. According to the CDC, six teens aged 16-19 died every day due to motor vehicle crashes, and hundreds more were injured in 2017 which means their risk of an incident is higher than that of an adult. Protect yourself and your family against this increased financial risk by having an umbrella insurance policy in place.

A High Net Worth

You have put a great deal of work into to building your assets. Income, home, real estate investments, retirement accounts and savings. Once someone else experiences a simple accident or mistake that causes harm, it could all be at risk. Having an Umbrella Policy in place can protect you and your assets from these types of incidents.

Non-Profit Spotlight : Paws 4 Law Foundation

Our community is full of incredible people and organizations, out making a difference for others! In this month’s Non-Profit Spotlight we’d like to recognize the Paws 4 Law Foundation!

Paws 4 Law Foundation was founded back in 2012 by local residents and business owners as a non-profit organization to support the City of Murrieta Police Department K9 Unit. Monies raised by its members is used to improve the performance of the K9 Unit to maintain a high quality of life for the active and retired police dogs that serve the City of Murrieta. Through donations and fundraisers, they are able to support the City of Murrieta Police Department K9 Unit with training, safety and agility equipment, training, seminars and competitions for the K9 handlers and their K9 partners, funeral and burial costs for both active and retired K9s and additional service dogs.

For the month of September 2020 Stromsoe Insurance will donate $20 to Paws 4 Law Foundation for every referral that comes to our team!

Learn More about The 2020 Vision Referral Rewards Program HERE…

The MPD currently has five active K9s:

  • K9 Buck, a 7 year old Belgian Malinois, has been with the MPD for 4 years
  • K9 Duke, a 3 year old Bloodhound, has been with the MPD for 2.5 years
  • K9 Lew, a 4 year old Dutch Shepherd, has been with the MPD for 1 year
  • K9 Odin, a 4 year old Belgian Malinois, has been with the MPD for 1 year
  • K9 Mick, a 4 year old Belgian Malinois, has been with the MPD for 2 years

The Paws 4 Law Foundation works hard to support the needs of the City of Murrieta Police Department K9 Unit. We spoke to Officer Bock, handler to 4 year old Dutch Shepherd MPD K9 Lew, to get a better understanding of the value a Police K9 brings to a Department.

Stromsoe Insurance Agency: What kind of training do each of the dogs and their handlers go through initially?
Officer Bock: Initially, all of the dogs receive their training in Europe by their owners from the time they are born until the time we get them. They are typically purchased between the ages of 1.5 – 3 years by each department as needed. Once the handler and the dog are paired together as a team, they attend a 6 week training Basic Handlers Course put on by Adlerhorst International. After the initial handlers course, the K9 team spends a minimum of 10 hours every week training, in addition each handler will attempt to find time throughout each shift to add in additional, individual training for his K9.

Stromsoe Insurance Agency: How much of their time is spent training versus active use?
Officer Bock: I can’t speak for all departments, but there are two main differences that I have discovered with departments and their K9 teams. For example, in Murrieta a K9 team serves as a collateral capacity to assist patrol whereas other departments utilize their teams as a full time responsibility. This means that in Murrieta, although our K9s are with us during every shift, we may not have a need for them during that shift and in turn, assist with patrol duties handling calls for service. In other departments, if they are not responding to a call for service, then their time is spent training.

Stromsoe Insurance Agency: What are some of the misunderstandings you find people have for the K9 unit?
Officer Bock: A common misunderstanding is that the public can approach the dogs and pet them like a family dog. While we do socialize the dogs, they all have different personalities and it is best to ask the handler before approaching.

Stromsoe Insurance Agency: What is the benefit that a K9 Unit brings to a Police Department?
Officer Bock: Our dogs are used for more than just apprehension of a subject. They are often dual trained in apprehension and one other skill set such as tracking or detection. They also can be used to diffuse situations just with their presence.

UPCOMING EVENTS:

Due to the Coronavirus, there is not yet a date set for the 4th Annual K9 Trials, but we look forward to seeing K9 teams from throughout Southern California, Mexico and the U.S. Military as they compete for the Top Dog Award and raise awareness for the capabilities of K9 Units to keep their communities safe.

The Paws 4 Law Foundation receives funding through donations and fundraisers, but Coronavirus has impacted their ability to raise funds for their organization. The foundation is looking for any restaurant or business owners willing to host a fundraiser or help with fundraising ideas, please reach out at [email protected] or call (951) 821-8775.

How do You Prepare for an Earthquake?

Earthquakes are the release of energy as tectonic plates shift, causing waves through the earth’s crust and resulting in the shaking that we feel. While technology has gotten more advanced, there is not exact way to predict when an Earthquake will hit and how strong it will be. They can happen at anytime, so to protect ourselves and our loved ones, we prepare. Here is how you can prepare your home, your family and your community in case of a quake.

Prepare Your Home

  • Do not hang heavy items, such as pictures and mirrors, near beds, couches and anywhere people sleep or sit
  • Anchor top-heavy, tall and freestanding furniture such as bookcases or china cabinets to wall studs to keep these from toppling over
  • Check your fire extinguisher and replace it when it is nearing it’s expiration date
  • Call your insurance agent and cover your home with Earthquake Insurance, this is excluded from your Homeowners Insurance, but can be added easily
  • Know how to turn off your gas, water and electricity and keep tools nearby to do so
  • Keep a flashlight, slippers and gloves next to beds

Prepare Your Family

  • Make an Emergency Kit for you home and car
  • Practice drop, cover and hold on with your family members
  • Practice an Evacuation Plan
  • Keep your gas tank at least half full.
  • In case of an evacuation, have a plan for your family pets
  • Make a Pet Emergency Kit
  • Check with your workplace and your children’s schools and day care centers to learn about their earthquake emergency plans
  • Pick safe places in each room of your home, workplace and/or school (this could be under a piece of furniture or against an interior wall away from windows)

Prepare Your Community

  • Keep a sheet of local shelters and emergency locations and phone numbers you can share with your neighbors in an emergency
  • Get to know your neighbors and gather contact information to stay in communication during or after a natural disaster
  • Get certified in First Aid and CPR so you can help others in your community should they need it

Non-Profit Spotlight : Single Mothers Are Resilient Together (SMART) Moms

Our community is full of incredible people and groups, out making a difference for others! In this month’s Non-Profit Spotlight we’d like to recognize Single Mothers Are Resilient Together (SMART) Moms!

SMART Moms began in June of 2016 with the mission to provide education and support that empowers all single mothers and their children to grow and thrive in a compassionate, encouraging, grace filled environment. Their purpose is to provide a “unique opportunity for single women to gather in fellowship with other women in a similar situation, all without regard for religious affiliation or any other consideration. To share mutual concerns in a loving, caring environment that is dedicated to the premise that regardless of your situation, there is always an opportunity to experience love and joy.”

SMART Moms is currently supporting close to 50 active moms, as well as others who attend as they are able. Between the moms, children and volunteers, their meetings would range from 65-90 people, prior to COVID. Their weekly meetings allow them to bring in professionals for topics of discussion including finance and budgeting, health and exercise, bullying, suicide prevention, IEPs and 504s, prayer, vision boards, family law issues, self-care and so much more! They will also take field trips twice a year and celebrate together for holidays such as Mother’s Day, Easter, Thanksgiving and Christmas.

While the moms are learning about these important topics, the children are also attending talks and activities:

  • Babies and preschoolers will have nurturing and play time.
  • K-5th graders will have lessons on God, art, games, and time on the playground.
  • Middle and high schoolers will often split into groups based on gender to talk about topics that are important to them. Some of the topics the girls have discussed are communication and empowerment and some the boys have discussed are shaving, wearing a tie and relationships. The middle and high school aged children will often get together for topics that are important to them both: bullying, budgeting, etc.

Coronavirus has had an effect on every aspect of our functionality, and non-profits are no different. SMART Moms’ donations have been down due to the pandemic, but they are still doing everything they can to support the families in their care. While the in-person meetings have been completely stopped, they have continued to support the families with food donations and support via phone, text, cards and prayer.

3 Tips to Maximize Business and Schoolwork in a Full House

The kids are home from school and you have to work from home.

As more and more people are working remotely and schools are closed, it can be a difficult situation to say the least. If you’re working from home while your kids are completing class work in the next (or same?) room, how can you make sure you’re doing right by your business and your kids’ education?

While there’s no one-size-fits-all solution, here are three tactics to help make the most of your new logistical reality.

  1. Create a schedule

With everyone home, schedules are usually the first things to drop by the wayside. Don’t let this happen. You still have work to do and your kids have schoolwork to complete—this isn’t their vacation. Stick to your normal routine and business schedule as best you can. Similarly, make sure to set up a schedule for your kids. You may not be able to mirror a school day, but setting expectations for the day will help.

Try to schedule your kids’ individual schoolwork when you have to be engaged with your employees, co-workers, and/or customers. This way, for the academic work that does require some parental guidance, you can be available during your solo work time.

You can find a number of sample schedules online to help develop your own family work/school schedule—a quick search will return multiple options so you can find the one that’s right for you. And speaking of the web …

  1. Online resources

Looking for ideas and activities to help fill some hours after the schoolwork is complete for the day?

Let the web help. Here’s just a tiny sample of the online educational resources you can take advantage of to fill your kids’ schedule:

  • Khan Academy – featuring free online courses and instruction that can complement their day-to-day schoolwork
  • National Geographic Kids – featuring a treasure trove of content and activities for your curious explorers and nature lovers
  • PBS Kids – featuring educational fare for the younger crowd and a daily parents newsletter filled with tips and suggestions

Also, be sure to check out virtual tour options — many museums, zoos, and other public places now temporarily closed are offering the next best thing to being there in person!

  1. Patience

Is this really a tactic? You bet! This is an unprecedented time. Very few of us have ever encountered anything quite like this viral outbreak, so there are bound to be anxious household members. You can set a great example for your kids by remaining calm, answering their questions as honestly as possible, and cutting them a little slack as they work through this situation, too.

Finally, as you get your home office firing on all cylinders, remember to be patient with yourself. You’re not alone in trying to figure out this new experience. Lean on your trade associations for support and guidance, embrace the help, and let your team members know how they can help, too.

Remember, when something doesn’t quite go according to plan as we all adjust to this new temporary normal, take a deep breath, refocus, and get back to it. You, your family, and your business are resilient, and you’ll get through this time together.

Who’s the Next Non-Profit Spotlight?

Up in the Idyllwild Mountain Communities, reaching areas like as Paradise Corners, Pine Cove, Mt Baldy Ranch, Garner Valley and Mountain Centers, there is an incredible non-profit providing compassion, socialization and support to the communities’ seniors. Idy’s Helping Hands connects their seniors with the services they need to live and age in place with dignity and grace. “[Their] highest goal as an organization is to enrich the lives of [community] seniors and adult disabled residents through heart-centered compassionate practices of companionship, socialization, emotional support and engagement in meaningful, leisure-based activities designed to promote well-being and happiness.”

Through local volunteers and generous donations, they are able to provide connections to resources and help with the supporting paperwork, transportation for appointments, food bank pick up & delivery, home visits & well checks, respite services for home caregivers, help with running errands, socialization both with volunteers and with the other seniors in the community, and outreach phone calls. They have sought out to inspire compassionate connections and to bring their seniors out of isolation, even if how they do that has changed in the current climate.

Debbie Daniels, the Executive Director & Treasurer, was an Administrator for an Assisted Living Facility for 7 years. She would come in when she had time off and during holidays so that she could interact with the residents without being pulled away to complete her administrative tasks. When she moved to Idyllwild, she knew she wanted to get involved with the community by supporting the growth of companionship for seniors. Her passion turned into Idy’s Helping Hands.

In the uncertainty of Coronavirus, the way that we all function changed dramatically, but the need for socialization and companionship did not go away. Idy’s Helping Hands delivers Healthy At Home lunches every Thursday to the seniors, adults with disabilities and high risk residents on the hill and in surrounding areas. In just 10 weeks they have delivered 315 meals, delivering up to 54 meals a week with the help of your donations and partnerships with local eateries like the Red Kettle and Amelia’s Donuts. They were even able to deliver beautiful lilac bouquets in glass vases when the lilac farm, Alpenglow Lilac Gardens, wasn’t able to open for the season. This program is more than a sandwich; the sandwich is a vehicle in which Debbie explains, “we show up and they feel acknowledged, valued and appreciated.”

If you would like to support Idy’s Helping Hands, please visit their website to volunteer or donate. Additionally, if you have an idea of how to continue their quest of compassion and socialization for the seniors in Idyllwild and the surrounding areas, please contact them through their Facebook page.

What Types of Insurance Do You Need If Your Business Operates Online?

Cyber Liability

Your digital business should secure itself and its information while online. In the event of a data breach, cyber liability insurance will protect your business IF you have the right coverage forms. If information is hacked or leaked, it’s not a pleasant experience when the information is stolen AND there are high costs associated with the aftermath of an information leak. A robust cyber liability insurance policy can protect you and your business. These overages and more should be included:

  • Ransomware expenses
  • All Inclusive Business interruption costs
  • Computer restoration
  • Comprehensive Cyber Crime, including “Cryptojacking”
  • Public relations help
  • Hardware replacement
  • Legal fees
  • No risk management warranties
  • Unlimited first party reinstatement
  • Risk management services included
  • 24/7 Claims hotline with advice from Cyber Specialists
  • $-0 deductible
  • 90 forensic experts and data breach attorneys at your fingertips

Commercial General Liability

Commercial General Liability is comprehensive insurance, making it a must for the owners of online companies. It offers compensation for accidents and damage to property that occur at the premises of the company. Remember, if you’re selling a product and someone gets hurt by it, the manufacturer might be sued, but you likely will also be sued.

And As You Grow, Don’t Forget About:

Employment Practices Liability

You will need to start thinking more about defending yourself and your company as your company expands and you continue to hire more employees. Everybody wants a healthy work environment, but the fact is, there will be issues with employees. Whether or not the concerns are valid, they are important and you should be covered.

Employment practices liability covers businesses from things like:

  • Discrimination
  • Wrongful termination
  • Harassment
  • Invasion of privacy
  • Negligent evaluation
  • Mismanagement of employee benefits
  • Miscellaneous employment-related issues

Who are covered by the liability insurance plans for work practices? You, the proprietor of the company, are safe. There are the higher-ranking staff, such as managers or directors. There are also some policies that will protect employees.

Workers Compensation

Have you hired employees for your business? If so, you need workers compensation insurance policy. Accidents happen and you want to be prepared for them.

A workers compensation policy protects the workers for injuries and illnesses that occur when they’re on the job. If an employee needs time off to heal, then this is also covered. Workers compensation is also helpful if an employee is taking disciplinary action over an accident related to the work. Any legal costs related to litigation can be protected by the insurance policy for the job.

It’s important to provide and promote a safe working environment, but it’s also important to be covered by insurance when accidents happen.
