Essential Car Insurance | Bumper Damage

Car Insurance Scenario

You’re slowly backing into a parking space at the gym but don’t realize that there is concrete surrounding the light post and this causes you to misjudge the space. Next thing you know, you hear a crunch. You get out to check and your rear bumper is scratched and dented. What should you do about the bumper damage?

How Much Does it Cost to Fix Bumper Damage?

If the damage is minimal, you may be able to repair the bumper yourself with a few everyday tools, but this likely isn’t the case. Bumper repair costs vary depending on the severity of the damage and the type of car. Bumpers these days have sensors that help collision avoidance systems and this can mean costly repairs.  Pricing to replace a bumper ranges from a few hundred dollars for an average car to thousands of dollars on a high-end car.

Your Insurance Coverage

Your collision coverage will take care of the bumper repair. Collision pays for damage to your own car that’s caused in a collision — not only accidents with other cars but also objects, such as a telephone pole, or fence.

Depending on your deductible, you may or may not want to submit a claim. A common deductible amount is $500. That means if you had $1,500 worth of damage to your car, your insurance company would cut a check for $1,000. You would need to pay the $500 balance. What if you also damaged the telephone pole? Your property damage liability coverage, which is required by law, would go toward the repair to the telephone pole. Normally, there is no deductible for property damage liability coverage.

Should You File a Claim?

There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to this question; it depends on your personal circumstances. However, if you decide to make a claim, your premium may increase at renewal time. It is always best to talk to your experienced, local independent insurance agent to see what is right for your situation.

Non-Profit Spotlight: Murrieta Valley Historical Society

Our community is full of incredible people and organizations, out making a difference for others! In this month’s Non-Profit Spotlight we’d like to recognize the Murrieta Valley Historical Society (MVHS)!

The Murrieta Valley Historical Society was formed in 2016 by a small group of residents who had a long-time interest in local history. For years, they had lobbied the city to recognize and preserve elements of Murrieta’s historic past and to create a Murrieta museum. While the city developed a long-term plan for a history park, it had no funds available to develop the park and build and operate a museum. With historical aspects disappearing as development continued to grow in the area, the residents decided to formally organize and to request use of a city-owned historic structure as an interim museum.

Initially, MVHS’ goals were to preserve and educate, bringing attention to the community’s historic features, seek to preserve them, and to create a place where assets could be collected, preserved and viewed.

MVHS primarily offers a connection to the area’s past. They were successful in gaining collaboration with the city to do achieve their goals. The city leased the small, almost 100-year-old “Hunt House” that sits between the city’s community center and a Little League baseball field that the society then developed into Murrieta’s first museum, which opened in 2019. This is an educational resource for all to use. Managed, funded and staffed entirely by volunteers, the museum was open one day a week for visits and on special occasions for tours, chiefly by third graders who are studying local history. The society developed a curriculum for use by local teachers.

For the month of April 2021 Stromsoe Insurance will donate $21 to Murrieta Valley Historical Society for every referral that comes to our team!

Learn More about The 2021 Vision Referral Rewards Program HERE…

stromsoe-insurance-agency-murrierta-valley-historical-society-non-profit-spotlight

The virus has substantially affected the society by forcing them to close the museum for the time being, restricting the public education it provides, and has caused a community program series to be suspended. Since third graders can’t currently visit the museum, they are working to transform the museum into a virtual visit. Eventually, that video will also be available on their website for viewing by anyone.

Murrieta Valley Historical Society is a membership society that relies solely on memberships, donations and grants to survive. Modestly-priced memberships can be acquired online, and donations are always appreciated. They also welcome volunteers to help run the museum and aid in fundraising efforts.

To get in contact with MVHS, send them an email, give them a call at (951)387-4862 or write them: Murrieta Valley Historical Society; P.O. Box 1341; Murrieta, CA 92564

To reach the Museum Director for information, or to make an appointment for a group tour, call Annette Jennings at (951)757-4123

If you would like to help support the Murrieta Valley Historical Society, please engage with them on Facebook or Instagram.

What in the World is “Named Peril” vs “All Risk”?

What is a Named Perils Policy?

In the insurance industry, a named peril is a term used to describe a particular type of cause of loss that is a covered “named peril” in your policy.  In insurance, what does a named peril mean? Typically, covered causes of loss for named perils are one of  these 16 events:

  1. Fire or lightning
  2. Windstorm or hail
  3. Explosion
  4. Riot or civil commotion
  5. Aircraft
  6. Vehicles
  7. Smoke
  8. Vandalism
  9. Theft
  10. Volcanic eruption
  11. Falling object
  12. Weight of ice, snow, or sleet
  13. Accidental water overflow or steam
  14. Sudden and accidental tearing apart, cracking, burning, or bulging of certain household systems
  15. Freezing
  16. Sudden and accidental damage from artificially generated electrical current

What is an All Risk or Open Peril Policy?

An all risk or open peril policy covers everything except what is specifically excluded in the policy. An all risk or open peril policy is the superior coverage form.

What are Common Exclusions?

Every insurance policy has exclusions. The most important thing you can do is have a conversation with your experienced, local independent insurance agent to determine your specific coverage needs. Below is a list of common exclusions under most property insurance policies.

Earthquake or Flood | Generally, traditional homeowners insurance does not compensate for damage caused directly by either flooding or earthquakes. We would like to assume that these are rare events, but as we have seen, the effect can be financially damaging.

Wear and Tear | Generally, the intent of an insurance policy is to protect against losses that are “sudden and accidental.” Most policies do not provide coverage when an item wears out due to age and simply needs to be replaced.

Again, the most important thing you can do is have a conversation with your experienced, local independent insurance agent to determine your specific coverage needs and to understand your policy exclusions.

Discover What You MUST Know About Protecting Your Mobile Home

Insuring a manufactured or mobile home doesn’t have to be complicated, whether you live there year-round or seasonally. A manufactured or mobile home insurance policy provides coverage for your home, your personal belongings, and structures on the land you own, lease or rent, for things like fire, windstorm, falling objects, visitor injuries and more.

Mobile Home Insurance versus Homeowners Insurance

In terms of purpose and definition, mobile home insurance is much like standard homeowners insurance. If your manufactured home gets damaged, this insurance coverage offers you protection against financial hardship that may come with having to pay for the repairs or rebuild out of your own pocket.

Typically, a policy for a manufactured or mobile home covers the structure, electronics and appliances, furniture and clothing, a shed or other unattached structures and medical expenses and/or legal fees if someone is injured on your property. Similar to homeowners insurance, you’ll want to get additional coverage if you are concerned about possible damage from earthquake or flood.

Want to keep reading?

What Does Mobile Home Insurance Cover?

Mobile home insurance provides coverage for the dwelling, personal belongings, liability coverage and more.

  • Dwelling coverage: This coverage is for the actual manufactured or mobile dwelling as well as other permanent structures on the property. In other words, any damage done to your home or other structures on the property (like a deck, garage or shed) that is a covered peril is covered under your dwelling coverage.
  • Personal property coverage: This coverage is for your personal belongings. If the items you own are damaged or stolen, your policy covers you, subject to your policy limitations.
  • Liability coverage: This coverage is to protect you in the event someone is injured on your property and you are held liable. Liability protection may cover legal fees and medical costs up to your coverage limit.
  • Additional Living Expenses: This coverage applies, up to the policy limits, when there is damage covered by your dwelling coverage that requires you to live somewhere else temporarily. This may include things like rent or hotel costs.

Make sure you understand the full scope of what is and isn’t covered before purchasing one of these policies, and that you can afford the full cost of repairs not covered.

stromsoe-insurance-agency-blog-graphic-mobile-home

Do You Need Mobile Home Insurance?

Mobile home insurance isn’t mandated by law, but before negotiating with you, mortgage companies and mobile home parks can require evidence of insurance. Therefore, mobile home insurance is required for anybody who plans to get a mortgage or establish their home in a mobile home park.

Considering that a new manufactured home in the U.S. costs an average of $70,600, we recommend purchasing mobile home insurance to protect your home and belongings. While policies can be costly, forgoing coverage means putting yourself at risk of a large financial loss.

“Let me start out by saying I have insured our “toys” with Stromsoe for years, and have always been very happy with service, responsiveness, et al. Today though, I called for a quote on a property we are starting escrow on in AZ, needing a quote for the lender for homeowners insurance. In AZ. (Did I mention it’s in Arizona?)
Bobby jumped on it, such a great personality! And because he heard the stress in my voice during our original call, wanted to make sure he had information for me by close of business. (Wow!) And .. well .. my other carrier (shall remain nameless) was more than FIVE TIMES the annual premium than what Bobby quoted me! Done deal. I know who I’m going with, and will stay with. Plus I get birthday cards. 😊 Mike Stromsoe and his entire staff .. just wonderful.”

The Secrets to Helping with Your Claim

Imagine this: It’s Saturday afternoon and you hear a loud noise. Your fence has blown down due to high winds. Should a claim be reported to your insurance company immediately?

This is what you should consider to determine if filing a claim is a good idea:

Reporting Your Claim | The very first thing you’ll want to do when you think you may have a claim on your hands, is to contact our agency immediately to discuss your claim. There are some cases where filing a claim may not be in your best interest. For example, if the amount of work to be done will not exceed your deductible, then the cost will be out-of-pocket and you now have a claim listed on your policy. Once you’ve discussed the situation with your agent, you’ll want to make a record of any damage and be ready to submit photos, videos and documentation of all pertinent facts, including names, phone numbers, witnesses, etc. The last immediate step to take is to prevent any further damage.

If you decide to submit a claim after a conversation with your agent, here are some of the next steps you will experience:

  1. Assigning Your Claims Adjuster| An adjuster is assigned to you to assist with all of the steps of your claim. This is the person who will give you information about next steps and help you if you need payment assistance, such as additional living expenses. It’s important to remember, that just because you have been assigned a claims specialist, this doesn’t mean your Stromsoe Insurance Protection Team isn’t here to support you through the process. We’re just a call, text or click away!
  2. Evaluation & Inspection | Your claims adjuster will gather information about your case and the level of damage sustained while evaluating your claim. This is when you may be asked to provide documentation of damage, such as photos or an inventory list.    Quick Tip: Keep all of your receipts, make notes of who you talk to along with phone numbers, emails and everything that happens during your claims process! From temporary repairs to additional living expenses and food.
  3. Estimating & Determining Coverage | After gathering all of the facts and your documentation of the event, your adjuster will review their findings and your policy and if coverage applies, will prepare and estimate of what they propose to pay for your damages.
  4. Payment & Repair | Your claims adjuster can now issue payments based on the terms of your policy! If you have a mortgage, your lender may have the right to be included as a payee.    Quick Tip: If a contractor asked you to sign a “direction to pay” your insurance company may be required to pay the contractor directly. Again, contact your independent insurance agent before signing anything.
  5. Resolution | Your claim is now resolved, but we are here to help you keep your investments safe. If you or your contractor discover additional damages, contact us immediately so we can help!

Non-Profit Spotlight: Assistance League of Temecula Valley

Our community is full of incredible people and organizations, out making a difference for others! In this month’s Non-Profit Spotlight we’d like to recognize the Assistance League of Temecula Valley!

Assistance League of Temecula Valley is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization that transforms lives and strengthens our communities through philanthropic programs in Southwest Riverside County.  They run through the strength and support of approximately 200 volunteers! The initial goal of ALTV was to provide local assistance to children and families living in poverty. Although the core goal has remained consistent over their more than 30 years of service, the organization continually works with community partners to determine the needs of the community and to adjust and broaden their service goals as necessary. Adjusting to the impact of COVID-19 on local disadvantaged families has resulted in creative solutions needed to provide substantial services to recipients.

COVID has not only affected their fundraising ability but has also changed how they deliver services. The ALTV Thrift Shop is their main fundraiser, but due to COVID they were required to close the for several months. The shop has now reopened, but on a very limited basis. ALTV continues to develop alternative methods of delivering services after the closure of schools.

Yet another way that ALTV is cultivating change in communities is with their support of a teen auxiliary, Assisteens! With more than 50 members, the Assisteens provides volunteer opportunities for youth in grades 7 through 12. They learn to develop a sense of community and personal responsibility, as well as self reliance, poise, public speaking and leadership skills.

For the month of March 2021 Stromsoe Insurance will donate $21 to Assistance League of Temecula Valley for every referral that comes to our team!

  • One weeks provisional supplies are provided to foster youth that are entering the social system
  • Graduation assistance is provided to homeless and foster youth
  • Teddy bears are provided to local hospitals for children in trauma
  • Financial literacy classes are provided to at-risk high school students
  • Through partnerships with other nonprofits ALTV provides assistance with services that they do not have a program for
  • ALTV meeting room is provided free to other community nonprofits for meetings and events

ALTV’s main philanthropic program is Operation School Bell, a signature program that provides new school clothing and shoes to students living in poverty. Because ALTV is strongly identified with this program, it comes as a surprise to many that they have a multitude of programs supporting their local community!

Donations are always welcome and will support their efforts to support disadvantaged children and families in Southwest Riverside. There are many ways that you can support ALTV in their mission: (1) shop at the ALTV Thrift Shop at 28720 via Montezuma, Temecula 92590 Wednesday-Saturday, 1:00-4:00PM, (2) donate gently used items to the Thrift Shop during business hours, (3) donate through their website, or on their social media platforms! All funds are used for programs serving the local communities. For more information you can also visit their website.

Assistance League currently has a face mask distribution for their thrift shop customers, due to generous donations by Temecula Valley Chamber of Commerce and the Temecula Rotary. Each customer receives a package of 5 face masks at check out! The campaign is, “For those you love”, WEAR A MASK!

Uncovered Claims Average $40k-$60k for EPLI

The expenses associated with lawsuits for employment practice issues can be staggering and are on the rise. Employers can face a variety of complaints and litigation over wrongful termination, discrimination, harassment in the workplace and retaliation. To be sued, a company owner wouldn’t even have to be in the wrong. To better protect company assets, it is essential to find the right Employment Practices Liability Insurance (EPLI) to cover defense expenses and losses involved with multiple employment-related claims.

What Is Employment Practices Liability Insurance Coverage?

EPLI is insurance that gives companies coverage against employment-related lawsuits such as claims of harassment, wrongful termination, discrimination or other work-related issues. Such lawsuits are increasingly common in today’s business environment. The most common claims filed are for retaliation, sexual harassment, discrimination and wrongful termination.

Many large corporations are well protected and can deal with nearly any type of employment-related lawsuit. Unfortunately, new or small businesses can be highly vulnerable to this type of claim. Many of these businesses lack an employee handbook or a legal department that can advise on proper procedures to follow regarding terminating, disciplining and hiring employees.

If you need help with a handbook and other HR matters, click here!

stromsoe-insurance-agency-blog-graphic-employment-practices-liabilty-insurance-epli-explained

What Does EPLI Cover?

Retaliation: Taking a negative action toward a person in response to a protected action or a decision they’ve made. Example – if an employee is terminated for telling a government agency about illegal activity at your company.

Sexual Harassment: Workplace sexual harassment is defined as “unwelcome sexual advances, requests for sexual favors, and other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature.” Example – a joking comment that is sexually descriptive in nature with an employee.

Discrimination: Making improper or illegal decisions regarding a person’s compensation, promotion or hiring. Example – if an unqualified job applicant is hired because they’re the boss’ daughter.

Wrongful Termination: Giving a person an inaccurate, unfairly low or excessively negative performance evaluation. Example – if you make up a false incident report about an employee on a review.

Wage and Hour Claims: URGENT – Coverage for wage and hour claims is not included by most policies. Please contact our business insurance team for more details.

Put Your Mind at Ease with Top-Notch Rental Property Insurance

Rental property insurance, also called landlord insurance, covers the unique risks taken in renting out your home or condo for long periods of time. These policies include coverage for the structure, liability insurance protection and loss of rental income for landlords renting their property. Whether you are renting a house, a vacation home or an investment property to others, rental property insurance is an important safeguard against the financial risk associated with tenants living on your property.

What Does Rental Property Insurance Cover?

Rental property insurance coverage will vary from company to company, but policies will generally cover the dwelling, liability protection and loss of rental income. Many features of a landlord insurance policy are similar to a homeowners insurance policy, however, there is a cost savings for the landlord due to policy coverage differences.

Dwelling Coverage

Rental property insurance covers physical damage to the structure of the home itself. For example, it will cover damage to your walls and roof but not personal items of your tenant. Coverage will only extend to damage caused by a covered peril, and you should make sure to understand what type of perils are covered by your individual policy.

Coverage For the Landlord’s Personal Property

Unlike renters insurance, rental property insurance does not cover the personal property of tenants inhabiting the property. However, these policies can include coverage for items left onsite by the landlord. For example, if you left a lawnmower at your rental house and it is damaged by a fire, damage to the machine would be covered. On the other hand, if your tenant bought a personal air conditioning unit that is damaged by the same fire, the AC unit and the rest of the tenant’s property would not be covered by your rental property insurance.

Want to keep reading?

stromsoe-insurance-agency-blog-graphic-rental-property-insurance

Liability Coverage

Liability coverage will protect you from the legal and medical costs associated with someone being injured on your rental property. If your tenant or a visitor is injured on your property, and you are deemed responsible for the injury, rental property insurance can cover these costs up to your policy limits. If you’re someone for whom the limits of this coverage are not sufficient to cover potential liabilities and you wish to increase your coverage, you could also purchase umbrella insurance for your rental property.

Loss of Rent Coverage

This coverage offers security against loss of rent payments if, because of a covered peril, the property you rent is uninhabitable due to damage from a covered loss. For instance, if fires are protected by your policy and fire damage makes your apartment unlivable, you are covered by rental income protection for the rental payments that your renters are no longer required to pay. In general, coverage will extend to a specified period of time, such as 12 months. Loss of rental income does not always come standard with rental property insurance, so you should check your policy before purchasing it if this type of coverage is important to you.

Optional Additions

  • Vandalism coverage: This usually covers deliberate physical damage to the home.
  • Ordinance or law coverage: This covers a loss of value or costs associated with enforcing local laws surrounding the repair of property caused by an insured loss. Make sure you include this protection.
  • Flood
  • Earthquake

Safeguard Your Business with Group Health Insurance Benefits

If you’re considering a group health benefits insurance plan for your company, it’s important to have all the information before you choose a plan. Group health plans provide benefits coverage to an employer group, usually comprised of company employees or members of an organization.

How Many People Do You Need?

When you buy group health insurance, you have to have a group. In other words, a single individual can’t sign up for this kind of plan. For small businesses there can be as few as two people in the group during the special open enrollment period. Otherwise, you need 70% participation, not including owners or spouses, from your company’s employees in order to get group insurance.

Why Is Group Health Insurance More Affordable?

Once the company chooses a plan, group members are given the option to accept or decline coverage. In certain areas, plans may come in tiers, where insured parties have the option of taking basic coverage or advanced insurance with add-ons. The premiums are split between the organization and its members based on the plan. Health insurance coverage may also be extended to the immediate family and/or other dependents of group members for an extra cost.

Group health insurance is sometimes lower in cost than an individual plan as the risk to the insuring a company is lower, since the plan is shared across more people.

stromsoe-insurance-agency-blog-graphic-group-health-benefits

What is Considered a “Small” Employer Group?

When we talk about small businesses in the context of group health benefits, a small employer is one that has from 2 to 50 employees. A sole proprietorship with only one employee (the owner) isn’t eligible, and if you have more than 50 employees you are considered a large group. The large group platform operates a lot differently than small group.

Looking for something else to read?

How Does the Shared Cost of a Group Health Benefits Plan Work?

The cost of a group health plan is shared by everyone in the group, by the employer and employees. In other words, these plans sometimes cost less because there are more people in them. Also:

  • With some groups, employees pay a portion of their own health insurance premiums
  • To meet group health requirements, the employer must pay at least 50% of the employee health insurance premiums

Retaining talent is more important than ever. Showing your employees that you care about their well-being and by truly offering to help them by providing the option of group health and benefits insurance, this gives your employees one more reason to continue their career as part of your team.
